How couple by-passed Palace guest rules
Leeds printing Chief Martyn Duffield has been to the most famous address in Britain and awarded his MBE for services to charity. Now when you become a member of "The Empire Club" you are given strict instructions - nay orders – that no matter who you are you may only bring 3 guests to Buckingham Palace, "There are no exceptions" blasts the invitation for your investiture.
Martyn did take his Mum and Dad for the trip to London along with his chosen guests, Ozzie fiancée, Karen and 2 sons Adam and Simon although they split up at the palace gates.
But as Joan and Ernest stood in front of the palace painted railings looking inwards Joan began to think what it would be like to meet up with their son's investiture party and asked several police men if they could come in to see their son. There was no positive response until one lady Peeler opened the gates and said "follow me".
A policeman escorted Joan and Ernest to the inner courtyard and imagine the delighted surprise of everyone donned in top hat and tails when Ernest in shirt sleeves and sandals and Joan with her printed rose frock appeared waving and shouting "Cooee".
